Issue #21974: Settlers and guards et al all disappear from settlement at 8pm and reappear in the morning

Its a weird one and doesn't happen all the time. But intermittently I will travel to a Far Harbor settlement to do some work on something and at 8pm instead of going to the bar EVERY single inhabitant including the guards will leave the settlement, very purposefully but not with weapons drawn and all trail off down the road en masse.
If I ring the settlement bell they will come back and when the timer on that runs out they will go to the bar as if nothing at all had happened and use their beds as usual, if I don't ring the bell they wander back in randomly the following morning to start work. I watched them do this 2 nights consecutively at Longfellows Cabin - should probably have trailed them but was too busy trying to see if I had done something weird to cause the behavior - then I tried the bell, did that 2 nights on the trot and the third night it stopped. Just had it reoccur at The National Park Visitors Centre. I don't use any mod which adds patrols to Far Harbor to the best of my knowledge but I have seen someone else with the exact same issue reporting it on a mod page which adds patrols. The mod was NPC's travel no 16987, poster was Dw7ar215D 26th Jan.

One idea to this problem: I had once a 'Hermit Crab quest'. The settlers talk to you - a Hermit Crab has been found and they want to go hunt it.

I agreed, and exactly what you describe happened: The entire settlement walked off as a group toward the Hermit Crab location. I followed them. They walked along nearly the entire island, there were a lot of fights along the way, and sometimes I lost 2 or 3 of them (not dead, but out of sight). Two of them hanged on a fallen tree (pathing problem), but all of them showed up in the end. Because I never was on this location before, I could not fast travel. The fight went well (if hard, as I am level 80+) and in the end they were happy, wandered around there and the quest ended.

I returned to the settlement (first running a bit, the fast travel) and all my settlers were missing. But they came back, after I waited around 12 in game hours and all went back to normal.

What you describe here is a Hermit Crab quest - but without quest obviously. You could try to follow them - maybe it is a quest, without informing you? Maybe the quest starts even if you do not talk to a settler and agree? If you follow them eventually you should come to one of the Hermit Crab locations, if it is the quest indeed. It is bug to start it without you agreeing.

Settlers are not normally going to the bar after work, because their relax sandbox package is broken. If they do anyway, you may be running a mod that has a repaired version of that package. Problem is that you can't satisfactorily repair the package without modifying its template (pairing a Find procedure with a Travel procedure was not a good idea; the Travel procedure is best replaced with a Sandbox procedure). When you do it anyway (i.e. leave the template alone and make it work by modifying the parameters on the package only), you may get the behaviour you described as a side effect.

Sorry my response is err several months late. I have just started a new playthrough and got my first settlement on Far Harbor and the bug has reappeared.
Sclerocephalus as far as I am aware the only bug fixing mod I have running is the Unofficial patch. I don't run any mods which affect settlers at all, companions yes, settlers no.
My settlers have always gone to a bar in the evening on the mainland, maybe because I do use the invisible furniture mod and stick a load of activity markers for them in the bar area? So they maybe going to those instead of the bar, who knows, but never have a problem at all on the mainland. They do use the bars in my settlements in Far Harbor, just not all the time as I originally described. Guards on the mainland never wander off only on Far Harbor.
The only mod I can think which might be affecting Far Harbor settlements is We Are the Minutemen as that adds minutemen patrols and I do occasionally see those in my Far Harbor Settlements.

But anyway as no one else has reported this bug its obviously something in my game and not any else's - I'll trail them next time it appears and see if its the hermit crab quest as LoneWanderer has suggested. :)
Thanks for responding.

Ok so my final post on this subject and this is entirely if someone else gets same issue and thinks they are all alone.

I trailed them next time it happened.
22 settlers, including guards, farmers, bartenders, shopkeepers et al wandered all the way from Echo Lake back to Far Harbor Town, then down onto the dock next to the boat you arrive on, and one by one opened an invisible door and vanished. So I don't think it has anything to do with Hermit Crabs.
Seems to me to have more to do with patrols from the 'wealth but I have no idea how to check if "We are the minutemen", the light version, (the only mod I have running which alters patrols) has anything to do with it. On the face of it its difficult to see how it could as from my cursory look it doesn't add patrols that weren't already there, simply makes existing ones have more people.
I'm putting it down to "just one of those weirdnesses one gets in modded Bethesda games" and not worrying about it any more.

This sounds as though it's caused by the mod you mentioned since no such thing seems to happen with my own settlements on Far Harbor. The settlers go about relaxing as usual once 8pm hits.

It's entirely possible for a mod to add patrols and end up casting too wide a net and grabbing stuff it didn't mean to grab. Chances are if you had followed the settlers through the exit back to the Commonwealth you'd see them following one of those patrol routes.
